Elephant Gambit (2...d5): Is It Sound? Lines and Stats by Rating
2...d5 hits back in the center straight away and offers a pawn. It is a surprise weapon rather than a main line: with accurate play White keeps an edge, but many players do not know the accurate play.

Plans for both sides
White
- 3.exd5 is the most common answer. After 3...e4 4.Qe2 Nf6 5.d3 White wins time against the e4 pawn.
- 3.Nxe5 is also strong: after 3...Bd6 4.d4 dxe4 5.Bc4 material is level, but White is better developed and the e4 pawn can become a target.
- Do not rush to keep both pawns. Develop, castle and hit the e4 pawn.
Black
- After 3.exd5 the main try is 3...e4, gaining space and hitting the f3 knight.
- Against 3.Nxe5, 3...Bd6 develops with tempo ideas; 3...dxe4 is the most common choice below 1200.
- Taking back with 3...Qxd5 lets White develop with Nc3 and gain time on the queen.
